#7 The Pause

We have looked at speech preparation; now at speech delivery:

The successful speaker is the master of the pause.  Knowing how to stop a constant flow of words is as important as being able to keep the words flowing.

A pause can add suspense, or emphasize the importance of what is being said, or it may allow the audience to assimilate what has just been said.

A speaker delivering a speech from bullet points will pause at the end of each section, and glance down at their bullet points on the lectern.  This pause not only helps the speaker, but also serves to allow the audience to assimilate what has just been said.  The speaker will speak again when they look up at the audience and not when they are still looking down.  In this way the speaker maintains eye contact with the audience.
