Introductory Post #4 Church Affiliation

I was born an Anglican and baptized by my uncle. As a child my upbringing was very liberal and free, though I have been to church every Sunday for my entire life. When I was 17 my parents suddenly got converted to a more believing type of faith. I started to search aged 18.

At university I went to a Christian group and was offered the baptism of the Spirit. They started to pray for me and were having a tough time so called in reinforcements. While they did this I had a vision: some angels pulled me out of the abyss and set me on a high plateau. I was put on a path and at the end of this path there was a bright light which I knew was God. I started to walk towards the light.

I had an amazing spiritual time, although I was no less awkward than before. I was searching for the truth, but it had to be my way. Age 19 I became a Roman Catholic. This made sense as I was starting to visit often and live in Catholic countries: France and later Chile. When I eventually returned to England I returned to the Anglican Church more than once. Finally, in lockdown I ended up going to an Evangelical Church online and then in real life.

Different sides of me still link up with different churches. My wider family were members of almost every church in England, but surprisingly we all got on and maintained ongoing conversations about living out the Christian faith.

I have lived the Christian beliefs of each church – Anglican, Catholic and Evangelical – from the inside looking out, as opposed to from the outside looking in. This has been an immense privilege as it has brought me understanding of different practices and beliefs within Christianity. There is a path for me, but I can also connect with people of diverse views.
